Pavel Haas Quartet announces new violist

The Pavel Haas Quartet has announced that Šimon Truszka has joined the ensemble’s ranks as its new violist, following a year-long search. The Slovakian violist replaces Luosha Fang and joins fellow members Veronika Jarůšková (first violin), Marek Zwiebel (second violin) and Peter Jarůšek (cello).

Truszka studied at the Academy of the Performing Arts in Prague, and is a former member of the Kukal Quartet, which won the top prize at the Prague Spring International Music Competition in 2021.

The Pavel Haas Quartet was founded in 2002 by violinist Veronika Jarůšková and violist Pavel Nikl, who left in 2016 but remains a regular guest artist with the group. The ensemble came to international attention when it won first prizes at both the Prague Spring Festival Competition and Premio Paolo Borciani competition, Italy, in 2005. The quartet celebrated its 20th anniversary last year with a recording of Brahms quintets featuring pianist Boris Giltburg for the label Supraphon.

Truszka is the fourth violist to join the ensemble since the departure of original violist Nikl.

The quartet’s upcoming concerts include dates at London’s Wigmore Hall on 15 June, at the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, Austria, on 17 June, and at Bühnen Bern, Switzerland, on 19 June.
