Beethoven himself named the Sonata Op. 13 No. 8 the Grande sonate pathétique. It is one of his most popular sonatas as well as one of the best-known works for piano. All lovers of the instrument agree that it has exceptional emotional resonance. The sonata begins with a somewhat heavy grave introduction, followed by a contrasting allegro di molto that vibrates with intensity. After this very dramatic first movement, the exquisite adagio appears like a haven of peace, one where time stands still. The rondo is wrought with slow, powerful pathos, interspersed with little eddies that bubble up to the surface and that allow the intense drama of the first movement to reappear.
