Sonata No. 6 is utterly different. The first movement, unlike the dramatic first movement of Op. 10 No. 1, is a joyful, dynamic and somewhat joking work. The most disparate musical ideas are brought together in this movement seemingly through improvisation. One of the most notable is the false repeat with the main theme in D major. After a few bars, the listener begins to feel that something is not quite right, until a modulation that returns to F major reassures the ear. This is indeed remarkably effective. The second movement, filled with character and mystery, might have been written by Schubert. The presto final movement, which is more in the fugato genre, is one of Beethoven’s most brilliant piano compositions.
