With its humour and joking tone, Sonata No. 10 in G major Op. 14, No. 2, pays tribute to Haydn. The first movement retains a gentle, parlando intonation with a cordial conversation- like tone, while the second movement makes a subtle allusion to Haydn’s Surprise symphony. The third movement – a hybrid rondo-sonata presented as a scherzo – is a witty and impressive musical joke that reminds the listener of exactly what the origin of the word scherzo really is.
