Sonata No. 9 in E major Op. 14 No. 1 is a short work in three movements written like a piece of chamber music. Beethoven transcribed its intimate charm into a quartet several years later. The technique he used here involved associating rather disparate melodies, and the resulting organic unity is very much in the spirit of Mozart’s work.
