The Sonata in A Major Op. 2 No. 2 is sparkling and filled with fantasy. It has the transparency of a piece of chamber music and brings with it new tones. The first movement is bubbling with virtuoso ideas and unusual themes, and it oscillates between an almost mocking joyfulness and dramatic expression that runs the gamut of human passions. The hymn-like gravitas of the largo appassionato that follows is undercut by the humour of pizzicato bases. The last two movements shift between a slightly comical grazioso and vivid minore interludes that are inspired by folk music.
